Mathematics and Statistics to Enhance Commerce

The options for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce depend on their area of major studies:

Actuarial Studies

Students majoring in actuarial studies are required to include mathematics and statistics as part of their core subjects. They usually do the following program. Note that mid year commencing students who have not completed VCE Specialist Maths 3 and 4 or equivalent cannot complete a major in actuarial studies within three years. Students who are not eligible for the accelerated mathematics stream may enter through the standard stream but are required to obtain higher marks than for accelerated mathematics.

Non Actuarial Studies

Non-actuarial students may include mathematics as breadth if desired. The following program illustrates how students can take mathematics as breadth. The subjects marked with ¥ show the mathematics path that satisfies the quantitative requirement of the Bachelor of Commerce (replacing Quantitative Methods 1 and 2). Programs such as this one should be considered by students who have an aptitude for and enjoy mathematics, and who wish to study valuable complementary subjects in mathematics as part of their breadth component.
