Undergraduates Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Majoring in Mathematics and Statistics at Fourth Year (Honours) Level

While a the three year degree in a science discipline gives students a basic knowledge in their discipline, an additional fourth year of studies gives students a much deeper skill level to take into the workforce. In addition, the completion of a research project gives students the opportunity to work independently and to prepare for PhD studies.

Students doing a fourth year in Mathematics and Statistics will usually do subjects in two or three specialisations. The table below, and the linked pages, give a rough guide to the specialisations at fourth year level and how they follow on from previous years. More detailed information is available from The Department of Mathematics and Statistics Honours Page.

Please note that the Department is not committed to running the current Honours program beyond 2008. However, students enrolled in Heritage degrees only (degrees starting before 2008) will have access to an Honours program constructed from the New Generation Masters program.
