Diploma in Mathematical Sciences
A new course, the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is planned to commence in 2009 provided CRICOS accreditation is obtained for the course*. The Diploma will only be available in combination with a new generation degree. The Diploma will be available to most students in the new generation degrees. Within the Diploma, students will complete the requirements of the mathematics and statistics major from the Bachelor of Science. Students who take appropriate mathematics or statistics subjects as part of their degree (either as core or breadth depending upon their primary degree), will be eligible to complete the diploma by taking an extra 50 points (four subjects) in mathematics and statistics in addition to the 300 points needed for the bachelor degree. In some circumstances it may be possible to complete the bachelor degree and the diploma within three years. Students entering the University of Melbourne in 2008 may apply for a place in the Diploma in 2009 or later.
*Note: The University is in the process of obtaining CRICOS accreditation for this course and anticipates enrolling international students into this course from the start of the 2009 academic year. Unless this accreditation is received, the course will not be offered. Please contact International Admissions to check the availability of the course before applying. |
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences, students will be able to:
- demonstrate their understanding of the fundamental principles of at least one area in mathematics or statistics and its applications;
- think critically and argue logically to solve mathematical or statistical problems;
- provide mathematical or statistical advice to, and work collaboratively with, people in other disciplines such as science, industry, technology and commerce;
- engage in mathematical discourse with the wider community.
Course Structure
The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences involves a total of 100 points of specified study, of which at most 50 points can be credited from your degree. That is, to graduate with a "new generation" degree and the Diploma, you must complete a minimum of at least 350 points. There are three programs under subject 4. The choice of program depend upon the student's degree and their school preparation in mathematics. Students will need to enrol in the Diploma during second year of university.
An accelerated six-semester “fast track” sequence will also be available to students who demonstrate their engagement with University study by obtaining the necessary degree-specific average mark during their first year of enrolment, and are then willing/permitted to overload in subsequent semesters. These students will enrol in the Diploma after completion of second year mathematics and statistics subjects as specified in the Mathematics and Statistics major. There are three programs under subject 4. The choice of program depend upon the student's degree and their school preparation in mathematics.
