Options for First Year - Bachelor of Commerce
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce may take up to two Mathematics and Statistics subjects in first year to fulfill the requirement for breadth. Please refer to the Bachelor of Commerce website for further details about your choices. These subjects may be chosen from the university mathematics and statistics breadth subjects or from our mainstream subjects. Special requirements for Actuarial Studies and Master of Engineering are given below. Some common choices for students are:
Study Score |
Semester 1 |
Semester 2 |
≥38 in Specialist Mathematics 3/4 |
Accelerated Mathematics 1 (or 620-157 Mathematics 1 in 2008) |
Accelerated Mathematics 2 (or 620-158 Mathematics 2 in 2008) |
Between 27 and 39 in Specialist Mathematics 3/4 (see Note below) |
||
≥25 in Mathematical Methods 3/4 and no (or <27 in) Specialist Mathematics 3/4 |
Please refer to the Unversity Handbook for a complete description of these subjects.
Prospective Master of Engineering
Students intending to enrol in a Master of Engineering are required to do both their first year breadth subjects in Mathematics and Statistics and to choose one of the options below:

Note: ADVANCED PLACEMENT TEST (APT) Students who have not achieved 40 or more in Specialist Maths but who for some reason are very keen to enter 620-157 (e.g. a desire to pursue Actuarial Studies, for which 620-157 and 620-158 are required) may possibly be allowed to do 620-157 and 620-158.
- Students with a score of 35 or more in VCE Specialist Mathematics, may sit for a one-and-a-half-hour Advanced Placement Test (APT), and if successful, enrol in 620-157. The form is available here.
- Students with a score of 37 to 39 in VCE Specialist Mathematics are required to visit the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre in the Richard Berry Building before applying to sit for the APT.
