Prospective Students

"There is a student out there somewhere between the age of 5 and 25 who will be the first person to set foot on Mars . . .The next generation of students must study maths and science to prepare themselves for this voyage of discovery."

Mathematics and statistics is important in industry, commerce and science. Thus, as well as being a major in its own right, our subjects are an important component of many other areas of major study. In particular they are included in some majors within the Bachelors of Science, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design and Environments. In addition mathematics and statistics can be studied as breadth as part of the Bachelors of Arts, Commerce, Design, Environments and Music.

Please follow the links to our recommendations for VCE subjects and International Baccalaureate subjects.

Non VCE and IB students should check the entry prerequisites for their degree on the University of Melbourne website. Further information may be obtained by looking at the first year studies in their major in the University Handbook.

UMEP Mathematics

The University of Melbourne Extension Program provides students with the opportunity to study a unversity course as part of their year 12 program. For full details go to http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/school/aust/umep. Depending on their interests, students passing this subject may do second year mathematics and statistics subjects as part of their first year at Melbourne.

Majoring in Mathematics and Statistics

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science may choose Mathematics and Statistics as their major.

The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is available in combination with most undergraduate degrees. The Diploma allows students to complete the equivalent of a major in Mathematics and Statistics alongside another major in their undergraduate degree (other than Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematical Physics or Data Science).

For information about our subjects please explore the pages under Course Advice. For information on entry requirements for each degree see the main University of Melbourne page

Online Calculus and Probability

This online subject is available to Australian and International students and covers similar material to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) subject, Mathematical Mathematical Methods 3 & 4. The subject is suitable for any student wishing to meet the prerequisites for entry to the Bachelors of Science, Commerce and Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne.

While the subject is available to anyone, including students currently enrolled at The University of Melbourne, it will not count for credit towards any degree program offered by The University of Melbourne. More information...
